“Who is Daisy?” Jakob whispered.

I pointed to myself, and he nodded his understanding. Then I pointed to the next few lines.

“Watch perfectly.” That took a little more translation, to help him understand that “watch” had two meanings in English. When he nodded, I pointed to the next line:

Then I opened Captain Stewart’s bag and pulled out the book of my father’s poetry. On the first page, he had written the words “My smiles.” I translated that by smiling at him and pointing to myself.

Jakob smiled too, then held out his hand for the book. If he wondered what this book could have to do with our journey, so did I. He flipped through the pages, though these poems were also in English. Finally, he handed the book back to me, apparently with no more clue than I had about why my father wanted it.

Slowly, I translated the rest for him, letting him absorb each line before I moved on to the next.
